The Original Oregon Trail Game: Remembering A Classic. Anyone who was in grade school in the 1990s will remember the classic 1990 MECC version of The Oregon Trail. The popular computer game was a favorite of school administrators to teach geography and history. This feature is still experimental, the game may not work properly. Oregon Trail, in U.S. History, an overland trail between Independence, Missouri, and Oregon City, near present-day Portland, Oregon, in the Willamette River valley. It was one of the two main emigrant routes to the American West in the 19th century, the other being the southerly Santa Fe Trail. The Oregon Trail incorporates simulation elements and planning ahead, along with discovery and adventure, as well as mini-game-like activities (hunting and floating down the Dalles River). Travel The game includes several landmarks along the trail where players can make decisions, shop for supplies or rest. The Oregon Trail is an older, very popular computer game that was developed by Bill Heinemann, Don Rawitsch, and Paul Dillenberger back in 1971. It was then put out on the market in 1974 by MECC. The game is simple and was created to teach school children about the life of a 19th century pioneer on the Oregon Trail.

The information below is valid when operations are normal:

Due to the Governor's restrictions on group sizes related to COVID-19 exposure, all group sites remain closed for reservations. This includes picnic areas, meeting halls and group camps.

Reservations are accepted at most campgrounds and at parks with reservable group day-use facilities. Campsites and group facilities are first-come, first served when not reserved. That said, we recommend making a reservation, because sites and facilities fill quickly. Other things to know:

  • New reservations are accepted one day to six months in advance for stays that begin within this time period (effective Jan. 14, 2021).
  • New sites come online at 6 a.m. daily.
  • An $8 reservation fee is charged for each site reserved whether you call or go online.
  • You will receive a confirmation letter via e-mail (within 1 hour) or in the mail (within 7-10 days) after making your reservation.
  • You must be 18 or older to make a reservation. An adult must accompany minors at the site.
  • Horse camping sites are only for people camping with their horses or other pack animals.
  • Some campgrounds are first-come, first-served. Check individual park pages for season dates and reservation information.
  • Reservations are required for yurts and cabins. Coastal facilities require a 2-night minimum stay.

Full payment is required at the time you make your reservation or change an existing reservation.

  • Over the phone, we also accept American Express and gift certificates, if the reservation arrival date is in 10 days or more.

Changes and Cancellations

  • Changes can only be made over the phone by calling 800-452-5687 during business hours (8am –5pm Monday through Friday). Changes are subject to a service fee.
  • You may cancel your reservation by phone or online up to one day before your scheduled arrival. If you need to cancel on your arrival date, call the park directly. Cancellations are subject to a service fee.
  • Only the person whose name is on the reservation can change or cancel the reservation.
